What you need to do:

Create a NEW Photoshop canvas dimensions 8 x 4 inches (it can be larger but has to be at least these dimensions)

  • Make sure background contents is set to WHITE and Color Mode is set to RGB
  • Create a new folder DD1/Projects called “typography” and save there.

Pick a font, something unique, perhaps one that has to do with your theme. Type your first name as big as you can make fit!

Choose a THEME (animals, food, flowers, anything you like)

  • Search for usable pictures online; be sure they are good quality and, they all need to be the same type of graphic—either all cartoons or all photographs or all clipart-ish stuff… not a variety).
  • Save all the pictures you want to use in the typography folder you created.
  • Open the pictures in Photoshop, using the various techniques you’ve been shown or have discovered on your own, move the individual images over to the canvas with your typed name. Try to use magnetic lasso, quick selection, magic wand, and various other selection tools to select your images.

Place your pictures/graphics (should be one or the other, no mixing!) so that they interact with your letters.

You are creating a layered object.
  • Each of your pictures/graphics should ‘sit’ on one of the serifs, stems, spines, or descenders of your chosen fonts. (look at the graphic if you don’t know what serifs, stems, etc. are)
  • Remember, the goal is to create an original and creative Typography Font Art. Your name should be covered with pictures/graphics, but should still be recognizable!
  • Use warp, Liquefy, or other distortion techniques to make the images appear to wrap around or interact with the letters (or vice versa).
  • Once you have met all the above requirements you may personalize your work by changing the background color, adding a background image (remember to maintain your theme), or other techniques you would like to try to make it yours.

Save your PHOTOSHOP FILE (.psd)…then do a FILE, SAVE AS and save your project as a “yourlastnametypography.JPG” and "Turn In" on Edmodo.
